Zill Muffs

I am working up some crocheted zill muffs to sell at the Workshop and Bazaar in 2 weeks. They are super thin, super light, and stretch to fit your standard 2 inch Nefertiti's but are snug enough they don't slide around or need elastic to hold them on. They look like cute little flowers and I enjoy them much more than the thick ones I was using. Thick muffs completely muff the ring of the zill but dramatically change the way the zills feel and the amount of power you use to strike them together vs no muffs. As a novice, I need the zills to feel as much like they would on stage when I practice.

Here is a sound test so you can hear the difference it makes when you are practicing with and without zill muffs.

Blog

Updated blog template. For some reason my calendar is showing GMT instead of Central time zone. Every time I change the layout I have to redo all of the sidebar links.

Choreography Extravaganza (aka Over full turkey plate)

I know I said I would post about costuming. I do have new costuming stuff in the works but I don't really have much to show for it. I have taken my scissors to a perfectly good dress and cut it in half but I ran out of thread and I am left with a pile of butchered fabric and loose bra cups at the moment. And, butchered fabric photographs like, well, butchered fabric.

I also said I would post the next week's review for the Artist's Way. We had an extended time for chapter 4 which lasted 2 weeks but I was posting a week behind the current week so it would be a review not a week in progress, and now I'm getting chapter 6, which puts me at week 5 to review, but I don't think I've posted week 3 or 4. Wait...what?

In the meantime, I've filled my BD choreography plate a like it's Thanksgiving and I didn't leave any room for the pumpkin pie. Zivah kindly reminded me that Hips Noir is coming in October and asked if I'd be dancing in the show. My answer,

“Yes!”

which really means:

“FF**********CCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK! That's in 3 months! I haven't thought about that since May!"

Luckily, I already have music picked out and staging ideas. However, I've called in the troops (my Mom) for help with costuming because this year's costuming is even more critical than last year's...

if you can imagine

Every time I try to practice with the idea of “Tribal Fusion” in my head, I just stand in front of the mirror and frown a lot. If I think “Performance Art” things seem to go a lot smoother.

Speaking of Performance Art, I have officially begun work on a choreography piece that I've wanted to do for quite some time now. It is not a BD piece, but you go with what you know, right? It is approximately 15mins worth of music that requires 4 plus dancers. Very ambitious for me. I have a 6 month deadline and dancers already lined up for a weekly practice.

To top it off, I literally have 4 weeks before the Bazaar and Workshop on August 15th. I should be working on this since it is the closest performance on the calendar. Instead, I am focused on the one 6 months away, followed by Hips Noir (go figure). I have picked out my music, good o' fashioned oriental music, and I'm not so much choreographing it but listening to it for those key points of awesome so I can dance something cute and intended, making the rest of the song more of a nice walk through of it's cuteness.

For those of you who like math, that's around 25mins of choreography I piled on my Thanksgiving turkey plate. BD'ers out there already know what a pain a song over 4mins can be to work out (especially in time for performance). Can we say, “Overly ambitious?”

Chair Fusion

I've been a lazy bum by not posting this earlier. Here is a vid of the Chair Fusion number performed at Rakkasah 2009, choreographed by my ol' dance pal Brittney Laleh who defected to California some months back (she's the one in front).

Her choreographies could kick your ass. I bet it was super awesome to see it live.

Spify!

I'm on Midwest Bellydance Happenings as one of the "Dancers of the Month". Cool huh?

Go check it out, and while you are there, bookmark the site to keep up with Midwest BD workshops.

I stole/saved the pic for my personal collection. Thanks Suzzane!

Welcome Back

Will I ever reach the top?

I've been away from the internet for about 2 weeks now. The first week was part of the reading deprivation of Artist's Way (I'll talk more about this later). The second week being my vacation/birthweek. In order to catch up on the past two weeks without this being a super wordy post or veering too far from the topic of this blog (remember the whole promise of reading about bellydance?) I'll do a recap with some pretty pictures.

Cleaned out my 5x15x10ft closet (see above).

It has it's own window.

Worked on silver bedlah.

Made a work space.

Went to a parade

Watched friends blow stuff up.

Had in this order:
pizza
cupcakes
ice cream
pizza

Did more work on closet until over-run by green-eyed monster.

Green-eyed monster called in reinforcements and took over work space.

Also, in no particular order:

Ate tacos.

Saw the in-laws.

Sat in dentist office lobby.

Ate even more pizza.

Received b-day wishes and gifts.

Made a collage.

Practiced zills.

Played Red Faction on Xbox with Husband Person.

Watched Lucky #Slevin and The Machine Girl.

Had fight with vacuum and won.

Did some vacuuming.

Exercised.

Wrote a letter and mailed it.

Worked on class notes for BD workshop.

Ate a fortune cookie - “Good things will come to you in due course of time.”

Reread The Velveteen Rabbit.

Did more laundry than you can shake a laundry stick at.

Ate even more, yet different, pizza.

Got a free book at the mall.

Took a BD class on arms with Ananya.

Folded an origami paper crane.

Now we will return to our regularly scheduled blogging loosely related to my bellydance addiction. I have posts about costuming and the Artist's Way coming up!
