A Decade of Dancing

My first solo at the Clarion, Springfield, MO. Nov. 2000*

I was 21 when I first started bellydance class with Yasmine in January of 2000. I was working part time at a Software Etc. and going to community college part time. I also met the Husband Person that same year. Last week marks the 10 year anniversary of bellydance in my life.

In the beginning of my bellydance experience,  I would often have the following conversation with the Husband Person.

HB: "What are you thinking about?"
N: "Bellydance." (or costume, or music, or choreography, and so on)
HB: "Oh."

This conversation repeated itself for about a year until the Husband Person finally thought it best to leave me staring off into space in the knowledge that I was thinking about bellydance but that I still loved him.

Mansfield Ren Faire, June 2000

When I think about how bellydance has affected and infected my life over the past 10 years I experience a big mesh of feelings. It is something I feel in my chest, and not to sound cliche, something I feel in my belly. I could spend all day giving you analogies and telling stories about how bellydance has changed my life and made me a better person and so on, but I could never truly describe to you the way my chest tightens when I see a dancer's real self on stage or the way a tabla rhythm physically echos deep in my belly.

Instead, I will list all of the many things and experiences bellydance has brought into my life.

With Jman and the Husband Person, Mansfield Ren Faire 2001

I've danced inside, outside, at night, in full sun, in the rain, in the wind, on concrete, on grass, on carpet, on gravel, on asphalt, on tables, on chairs, on big stages, on little stages, in living rooms, in backyards, on flatbed trailers, in corners, on dance floors, down streets, in restaurants, in clubs, in hotels, in coffee shops, for fundraisers, for birthdays, for grand openings, themed parties, for showcases, during parades, at parks, at ren faires, in a church, in a bank, in a warehouse, at a zoo, at a sci-fi/fantasy convention, in a library, at an education center, for a fashion show, and in a window display.

2001

I've traveled to 5 cities (and everywhere in between) I had never visited before for the specific purpose of a bellydance function. I've met people from all over the US, Canada, Mexico, Brittan, Italy, Greece, Germany, Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, India, Japan, and more.

I have met dancers, musicians, teachers, doctors, writers, singers, business owners, therapists, cooks, seamstresses, engineers, graphic artists, accountants, insurance agents, photographers, students, families, young people, old people, men, women, famous, and some just down the street.

Tony Orlando, Naima, Yasmine, Brittany Laleh, and Keshain, 2002?

I've learned about sewing, dancing, rhythms, instruments, props, culture and customs, religions, languages, food, business, time management, commitment, dedication, friendship, hardship, and ignorance.

I have learned to wear stage make-up and smile even when the audience doesn't smile back. I have a rhinestone jewelry collection, hundreds of bellydance music CDs, beads, coins, false eyelashes, costumes, scarves, circle skirts, veils, a sword, a cane, a tabla I never play, and an album full of bellydancers' business cards.

2002

I've missed the beat, turned the wrong way, had the wrong music, and forgot what I was doing. I've picked glass out of my feet and beads from between my toes.

2003

I've tripped, fallen, made faces (see pics 2002 and 2003 above), cut, bruised, twisted, ripped, glued, taped, safety pinned my self. I've been in crappy hotels and gotten sick off of the free food.

Beledi promo shot 2004

I got a speeding ticket once and I've spent too much money on costumes, music, and workshops.

My first Greek Night performance 2004

I made friends with people 10 years ago that I still have today. Some of their children have grown up. Others, have passed away.I've laughed a whole bunch and cried once or twice.

The Ladies of Beledi, 05-06

Without bellydance, a big part of my life would be empty. To all bellydancers new and old, I wish you many happy memories and a good journey.

PS - To the Husband Person, You have lived with me through all of this. I do love you more than bellydance.

Bebop Bebop!

It's a secret no more! Three lovely ladies and I will be performing a +15min. set to the music of Cowboy Bebop at this year's Visioncon (Sci-fi, fantasy, comic, gaming convention) during the Masquerade intermission. The Masquerade starts at 6pm on Saturday Jan. 23rd, 2010. No this isn't bellydance. The four of us just happen to be bellydancers.

Cowboy Bebop

(Remember - we are doing this BEFORE they decide to ruin it by making it into a live action movie staring Keanu Reeves. Don't get me wrong. I like Keanu, and Cowboy Bebop, and will definately go to see it, and probably buy it on DVD. I'm just saying...)

Silver bedlah update

I'm actually a little further along with the bead work than in this pic. I've finished the cups and have begun beading the side straps. I've added 3 strands of gold fringe to each silver chunk on the belt to tie it together. I am seriously thinking about completely redoing the fan-shaped belt clasp. I originally made it to match the fan-shaped bra detail but since the incident of beading the right cup upsidedown it doesn't tie into the belt at all now. I'd like to make 2 new appliques, one for the belt clasp and one for the bra center.

Visioncon 2010

Wow, Cobra Commander is damn tall! - Visioncon 2006
(Those are Harry Potter costume glasses I'm wearing.)

Springfield's gaming, sci-fi, fantasy convention, Visioncon, is Jan 22-24, 2010. According to the con schedule bellydancing is scheduled for 12pm on Saturday. I will again be a volunteer and working at the registration desk. There is also a possibility I may participate in the Friday night Charity Slave Auction.

Also, my super secret "performance art" project will be revealed during this year's con. It is not BD so it will not appear during the BD hour. The schedule for this performance has been up in the air. And even though I got conformation today on when it would be, I am going to wait until it is set in stone before listing the time for it here.

Hope to see you there!

Manifest Destiny

It was only a matter of time before I could no longer deny the fact the my boobs have expanded and have begun to look for a home beyond my favorite gold bedlah. I bought this set secondhand and it was small in the bust to begin with. But, with some strategic plumping, fluffing, and haltering I have been able to wear it for the past 4 plus years or so. It has come time to do something about this Northern expansion.

I got lucky and had some yellow scraps of fabric from the yellow and orange costume I made 2 years ago. I began adding cup extensions by cutting strips of felt, lining, and covering them with the fabric to match the top curve of the bra. Once I was happy with the fit I began beading them to match the bra design.

I have attached the extention and  began adding a three dimensional row of silver beads to match the bra design along the seam to hide the original edge of the cup. The gold sequins and beads I am using don't exactly match the original which are smaller and have a more orange tint. I don't mind though. It is close enough in color and shiny enough that the 'Average Joe' won't notice. There is a lot of wear on the beading along the edges of the bra but I'm not going to replace it at this time (not really in my budget anyway). I figure I will just add some fresh fringe and new lining to help give it a much needed boost. I am now contemplating adding a little beaded side-boob cover as well. I don't need my boobs looking to expand to the East and West. I am playing this by ear so we will see how it turns out.

I've heard of dancers doing this same thing on their pro costumes by using the beaded headbands, wrist and ankle cuffs. The accessories on pro costumes already match the fabric and beads of the bedlah so there is really no additional beading needed to extend the cups. Unfortunately, that means no more matching accessories.

Dance Space

I haven't been very active posting over the holidays. My dance related activities are pretty minimal at the momment. I have managed to clear a dance space in my bedroom. This required moving furnature around that hasn't been moved in the 9 years we have lived in this house. I have a line-up of cheap closet door mirrors to hang on the open wall but that will have to wait until I borrow a stud finder.
